Game Menus

Main Menu

[Main Menu]

When the game starts you will first be presented with the main menu. From here you have access to the following:

  • Play - Start a new game of Quack V: Omelette of Doom! When you select this option, you will first be asked to choose the difficulty level you want to play at. Harder difficulty settings have more adversaries that move faster and toss eggs more often than easier settings. There are also fewer eggs, cartons, and health kits available to pick up in harder difficulty settings. note that the special "Kid Mode" setting will take you through a different series of levels where you have unlimited eggs, the enemies do not toss eggs at all, and the enenmies are clustered together for easy splatting. Great for young kids!
  • Options - Configure the default settings of the game to your preference (see below).
  • Quit - Leave the game and go back to the real world.

Options Menu
The options menu is used to adjust the sound volume, the display resolution, and the gameplay controls. Any changes you make on this menu take instant effect and are remembered for the next time you play the game. This menu can be accessed directly from the game's main menu or by pressing the "Esc" key while playing the game.

The options menu provides access to the following:

  • Audio - Selecting this will display a submenu to allow you to adjust the sound volume of the game (see below).
  • Video - Selecting this will display a submenu to allow you to adjust the video resolution the game runs at (see below).
  • Controls - Selecting this will display a submenu to allow you to adjust the controls you use while playing the game (see below).
  • Return to Game - Selecting this option will return you back to the current game in progress. If you accessed the options menu from the main menu, this button will not be present.
  • Main Menu - Selecting this option will return you to the main menu. If you currently have a game in progress, you will be asked to confirm that you want to return to the main menu. This will end the game in progress.

Audio Submenu

[Audio Submenu]

The audio submenu allows you to adjust the volume of the game's music and sound effects. The current setting of these volumes is represented by an egg displayed on a volume slider. Click and drag the appropriate egg to the left to decrease the volume and to the right to increase it.

Video Submenu

The video submenu is used to set the resolution at which the game runs. By default the game runs at 1024x768 with a 32-bit color depth. All resolutions supported by your computer are listed on this submenu with the current resolution highlighted.

To change resolutions simply click the new one that you desire. If you find the game is running too slowly, using a lower resolution may improve performance. Conversely, if the game is running silky-smooth, you may want to use a higher resolution for improved picture quality.

The video submenu also allows you to control if the game is running in fullscreen or windowed mode. By default the game runs fullscreen, but if you want to run in a window you can uncheck the Fullscreen checkbox by clicking it. Check the box by clicking it again to return to fullscreen mode.

The video submenu also allows you to control if the game is running with smooth or classic jaggy graphics. By default the game runs with Jaggy Graphics turned off. In this mode, all level textures are smoothed nicely. Check the Jaggy Graphics box by clicking it to turn on Jaggy Graphics mode. In this mode, all level textures are shown in classic pixelated glory. Uncheck the box by clicking it again to return to smooth graphics mode.

Controls Submenu

[Controls Submenu]

The control submenu allows you to change the controls that you can use to play the game. Quack V supports any combination of keyboard, mouse, and joystick controls. All of the various game actions (such as moving forward or backward or tossing eggs) are presented in a list along with the control that triggers that action. There are two ways to change controls:

  1. Button Controls - When you click on the name of a control in the list you will be asked to select a new control by pressing a button. This will work for any keyboard button, mouse button, or joystick button.
  2. Axis Controls - Next to each control is a down arrow. Clicking these arrows will display a list of all the axis controls. These are for things such as moving the mouse or a joystick forward, backward, or side-to-side.

If you choose a control for an action that is already used by another action, then you will be asked to confirm the remapping of the control. The old action the control was tied to will then have no control mapped to it. You should make sure to map a new control to any such actions.

In addition to changing the controls for specific actions, the controls submenu also allows you to adjust the turning speed in the game. The turn sensitivity egg slider allows you to adjust how fast you turn while playing. Moving the slider to the right will allow you to turn faster, while moving it to the left will cause you to turn slower. You should adjust the sensitivity to a setting that is comfortable for you.

The controls submenu also allows you to quickly change all of the controls to suit either mouse/keyboard play or game controller play. Click the Mouse/Keyboard button to set the game to use the default mouse/keyboard controls. Click the Game Controller button to set the game to use the default game controller controls. In either case, the game will ask for your confirmation before changing the controls. Note that the Game Controller button will be grayed out and cannot be clicked if your computer does not have a game controller plugged into it.
